We live in a cultural moment where people are spiritual but not religious, open to God but over the church, giving up on organized religion but still searching for truth, tired of hearing arguing about who is right, but still desperately desiring something real. And Kaka’ako is a neighborhood that reflects this unique cultural moment and is creatively leading the way forward culturally, artistically, and socially here in Honolulu.
This why, as a church we are moving from performance to process, from judgment to joy, from answers to adventure, from criticizing culture to creating culture, from being fake to being free, from hostility to the marginalized to hospitality to all, and from working for God to waking up to God. This is about all of us realizing that following Jesus is not just about experiencing life after death, its about enjoying and creating life before death. Together we are recognizing how life in Christ is about justice and joy, our past and our future, our connection with Christ and our commitment to community, and ultimately about seeing and knowing that all of life is sacred.
Imagine is a church in Honolulu, Hawaii committed to following Jesus into the future. We believe we are still co-creating the world God originally dreamt of, the prophets imagined, and Jesus lived and dies for thousands of years ago. We hope that you will come and create with us.
Who We Are
Kevin and Christine Sweeney are giving their lives to create a fresh expression of the faith—one that embraces the complexity of life, is unwilling to offer black and white answers in a world filled with color, is truly welcoming of all people, and sees imagination as the key to the future.
After receiving Masters Degrees in Theology and Intercultural Studies, Kevin is fascinated with and committed to creating environments for creativity, cultural innovation, social healing, communal cohesiveness, and personal transformation. As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Christine is passionate about healing, freedom, embracing possibilities, sharing stories, and living deeply into the moment.
This new moment requires a new imagination grounded in the ancient way of Jesus and committed to creating the future, and Kevin and Christine are excited to live into this moment.
